  1. Check the fuse box first — many cars have a dedicated fuse for the O2 heaters, and it's the cheapest possible fix
  2. Inspect the sensor's wiring and connector for melt, chafe or corrosion — it lives against a hot exhaust
  3. With a multimeter, measure resistance across the heater pins at the sensor plug — open circuit (no reading) confirms a dead element
  4. If the element's dead, replace the sensor — heater failures don't heal

Which dials to watch for P0135

The code itself is a snapshot. The fault sets after the car's watched the numbers over a whole drive cycle. Here's what's worth keeping an eye on:

From a cold start, watch how long it takes to wake up and start swinging. With a working heater that's a minute or two; with a dead one it sits flat until exhaust heat does the job several minutes later.
Short fuel trim
Shows you when the ECU actually enters closed loop. Trims sat frozen for ages after a cold start is the heater fault playing out in real time.

Yes — once the exhaust warms the sensor up naturally, everything works normally. The penalty is a few minutes of rich running and worse economy every cold start, which adds up in winter and isn't kind to the cat long-term. Safe to drive, sensible to fix.
