P0562: what it means

Officially? A wall of jargon. To most people? Absolutely nothing. That's exactly why we built the app.

The official definition vs. an actual explanation

Plug into any code reader and you'll get the same line every other app shows you. Technically correct. Practically useless.

What other apps tell you
"P0562: The electrical system voltage is low."
What OBD Mechanic tells you

"The engine's computer has seen the car's electrical voltage drop lower than it should. Usually that's the battery or the charging system. Start with the simple bits: a tired battery, loose or corroded terminals, or a poor earth strap. Then check the alternator and its drive belt. Many modern cars use smart charging that lets the voltage dip at times, so one low reading isn't proof on its own."

What actually causes it, cheap to dear

Worth checking in roughly this order. Don't jump straight to the expensive fix:

usually cheap depends pricey

Suggested checks

  1. Check the battery terminals are clean and tight, and look at the earth strap
  2. Have the battery tested. Many garages and battery shops will do it quickly
  3. Check the alternator drive belt for wear, cracks or slipping
  4. Watch the voltage with the engine running. It should rise above the engine-off reading once the alternator is charging, though smart charging systems vary by make

Which dials to watch for P0562

The code itself is a snapshot. The fault sets after the car's watched the numbers over a whole drive cycle. Here's what's worth keeping an eye on:

12 V battery
The headline reading for this fault. Engine off and rested for a few hours, a healthy charged battery sits around 12.6 V. Engine running, most cars charge at about 13.7 to 14.7 V, though smart charging can run lower at times. Staying low with the engine running points at charging. This dial reads at the engine computer, so it can sit a little below a meter on the battery.
Engine RPM (live graph)
Watch the voltage at idle and then at a fast idle. If it only recovers with revs, the alternator or its belt may be struggling.

Live simulation on the readings our free demo drive supports. This is how the app’s dials move.

It spots things you'd never see in the numbers

Codes rarely tell the whole story. The clever part is reading them together, and against your exact car. Here's the kind of thing it catches:

P0562: quick questions

Can I still drive it?

Usually, as long as the battery warning light stays off. Have the battery and charging tested soon, as a weak battery can leave you with a car that won't start. If the battery light comes on, the battery may not be charging and the car may only run a short while, so head somewhere safe.

Is it the battery or the alternator?

Check the battery voltage engine off, then running. If it rises clearly once running, the alternator is charging and the battery is the more likely suspect. If it stays low running, look at the alternator and belt. A proper battery test settles it.

How much will it cost to fix?

Cleaning terminals costs nothing. A battery or belt is a modest spend. An alternator is the dearer end. Some modern cars need the new battery registering to the car, which a garage can do.
