  1. Check whether P0171 is set too — if both banks are lean, hunt for one shared cause and don't chase per-bank parts
  2. Inspect intake hoses and clamps between the MAF and the engine for splits or looseness
  3. Clean the MAF with proper MAF cleaner — cheap and often the fix
  4. Watch both banks' fuel trims live — matching high trims mean shared cause; only bank 2 high narrows it to that side

Which dials to watch for P0174

The code itself is a snapshot. The fault sets after the car's watched the numbers over a whole drive cycle. Here's what's worth keeping an eye on:

Long fuel trim
Shows how hard the engine's compensating for the lean condition. And comparing bank 1 against bank 2 tells you straight away whether it's one shared fault or something on bank 2 alone.
MAF (live graph)
A lazy MAF under-reads airflow and starves both banks. If the reading looks low for the revs, that's your shared culprit.

Can I still drive it?

Short term, yes — same as P0171. But a lean engine runs hot and left alone it can start hesitating, idling rough and eventually doing damage. Not a tow-it-home job, but book it in or dig into it soon rather than ignoring it.

How much will it cost to fix?

Often pennies — a split vacuum hose or MAF cleaner costs a few quid. A replacement MAF might be £50-150 fitted. An intake gasket is a bit more labour depending on the engine. The dear end (fuel pump, injectors) is much less common, so don't start there.

Why have I got P0171 and P0174 together?

Because both banks are lean at the same time, which almost always means one shared cause — a vacuum leak or the MAF sensor — sitting upstream of both. It's actually good news: one cheap fix usually clears both codes.
