The honest comparison

How we stack up: no fibbing.

There are some brilliant OBD apps out there, and a couple of them beat us at things we're not too proud to admit. Here's where we win, where they win, and who should pick which.

The features, side by side

The four best-known rivals, and us. We've kept it to things you can actually check: and we've marked "partial" honestly rather than claiming a full tick we haven't earned.

A note on "read-only": some people want coding (registering a battery, resetting a service light). Car Scanner and Carly can do that on supported cars and we can't: that's a genuine trade, not a flaw. We chose read-only on purpose: the app can't accidentally change anything on your car.

On fuel: Car Scanner, Torque and Fusion all show live or trip economy worked out from the car's sensors. Ours learns this car's real mpg from the fills you tell it about, then turns your pump prices into a cost per mile.

In fairness to the others

If we only told you where we win, you'd rightly be suspicious. So here's the straight version: what each rival genuinely does better, and who should pick them over us.

Car Scanner

Free · one-off £1.19 to £3.59 to unlock on Android · 4.7★, 10M+ installs

The safe default, and for good reason: it reads enhanced modules on dozens of brands for free, has proper EV/hybrid battery diagnostics, and has years of adapter compatibility behind it. It still updates often, and now takes USB adapters too. It just works on almost anything.

If you drive something unusual and want the widest brand coverage for free today, Car Scanner is the sensible pick. We're catching up on breadth. They're already there.

Torque Pro

£2.95 one-time · Android · the original

The one we grew up idolising. Back around 2010, when reading your car's live data over a Bluetooth dongle felt like actual wizardry, Torque is the app that taught a whole generation what an ELM327 even was. Its custom-gauge and PID depth is still unmatched: nothing we build touches that ceiling. It had a HUD mode and a video-overlay plugin years before we did. It has also, with the deepest respect, barely changed its trousers since. That's the app we stand on the shoulders of; a little of it is in everything we made.

If you want infinite gauge-authoring depth and don't mind a classic look or tracking down a classic-Bluetooth adapter to match, Torque Pro is superb, and we'll never say a word against it. We're prettier and we've got the AI; we just don't out-tinker the tool that raised us.

OBD Fusion

£5.49 on Android, £9.99 on iPhone · brand add-ons from £13.49 · great on iPhone

Reviewers call it the gold standard for dashboard customisation, and its OEM coverage is current and clean. It works with CarPlay and Android Auto, maps your route, and remembers where you parked. On iPhone it's genuinely polished: more so than us there, since we're Android-first.

If you're on iPhone and want serious customisation with CarPlay, Fusion is a strong choice. Just know the enhanced coverage you came for often costs extra per brand.

Carly

Free basic tier · Premium £53.89 to £77.89 a year per brand, £86.89 for all brands

If you own a BMW, Mercedes, Audi or VW, nobody goes deeper. It's beginner-friendly, nicely presented, and can do real coding and service functions we deliberately don't touch. Its used-car check reads the car itself to spot clocked mileage. Ours compares the odometer with the last MOT record.

If you own a German car and want coding and dealer-level depth, Carly is the specialist. Do read the small print on renewals first: Premium is a subscription, not a one-off.

A newcomer: OBDAI

Free scanner · AI on a yearly plan, under $10 a month · US-focused

The closest thing to us we've found. Its AI assistant, ARIA, reads your live data from a standard ELM327 and talks it through with you, by voice if you like. It's young, with 10K+ installs. But it's real, and it's moving fast.

If you're in the US and want an AI to ride along on every drive, and a subscription suits you, OBDAI is worth a look. We charge per diagnosis instead, and we're built around UK cars.

…and where we'd pick us

Not to leave ourselves off our own page. Here's the honest case for OBD Mechanic:

  • You want an AI mechanic that reads your car's live data, not just the code you typed in, and explains it in plain English
  • You'd rather pay per diagnosis than sign up to a subscription
  • You like the idea of a dashboard that looks like a concept car, with skins you swipe between
  • You're in the UK and want to start from your number plate
  • You want maps, a HUD and speed-camera alerts in the same app
  • You'd like to see the motorway sign ahead before it comes into view, and when you're running low, the nearest pumps with today's prices
  • You want your fill-ups to teach the app your car's real mpg, and what a mile actually costs you
  • You're looking at a used car and want its history, its self-tests and its mileage in one place
  • You want one scan to find your car's own readings: tyres, doors, oil temperature, battery health. More makes each release. What you get depends on the car and the adapter

Try it: it's free to download.

Plug in, read your codes in plain English, and ask the mechanic. No card, no subscription.
